Figure Painting-  A workshop for artists working in oil with Brian Keeler

 

November 1 to 3, 2019 - Learn and grow into the time-honored practice of painting the human form in the academic realist approach.  This workshop includes a Friday evening presentation, followed by a two-day hands-on workshop.

 

Brian will be devoting most of his time to assisting the participants, but he will also be painting and demonstrating so as to show many of the aspects of painting the figure in oil.  Note- this workshop is for artists working in oil paint.

 

Schedule

 

Friday night November 1- 7:00 pm-

 

Welcome reception with refreshments served. Slide lecture at 7:30 on Keeler's unique approach to painting, composing and color use. This presentation will give an overview of the concepts to be covered in this workshop and is necessary for the participants. Open to the public for a fee of $10.

 

Saturday, November 2,

 

8:300 am- Arrive with all your supplies and canvases and canvas paper toned (in advance).   

9:00am- A demonstration of the exercises of gesture painting with oil. We will be working from a nude model and sometimes partially draped model.   The class will progress from doing very quick armature-like studies with burnt umber.  Then a successive series of stages working up to a full-value study in oil paint toward the afternoon.  Demos will be given of each stage during the class.

 

Noon- Break for lunch - order in advance from CTB.

 

1:00- 

We will review again and practice these fundamentals of constructing the paintings in this method.  Be prepared to create many works of short poses gradually working up to longer poses.

 

3:30- This session ends

 

7:00 pm - Optional  Slide lecture on the Renaissance.  Brian Has been teaching and traveling in Italy for over 25 years and brings to you the relevance of the renaissance art and the work of ancient Rome.  Understand the connections and many similar challenges between our endeavors and the paintings of those eras. Free to participants, $10 for guests and non-participants. 

 

Sunday, November 3

 

10- Resume the inspiration at the North Star Art Gallery.  Working from the live model again, set up a new pose and practice the concepts with instruction.

 

12- Lunch - order ahead in the morning.

 

1:00 - Approach to color.  Using the same approach as in the other sessions, which working progressively from armature to value- we will now begin to introduce color into the process.

 

3- Workshop ends

 

Non- participants may attend the Friday lecture for a fee of $10 Make checks payable to North Star Art Gallery. Space is limited. Reservations are requested by  with online payment options available.

The fee of $350 includes the evening presentation, two-day workshop.  $150 deposit reserves your place.  Register early (before October 1, 2019) and receive $50 off.  The Friday or Saturday evening presentations are available to people not attending the workshop for $10
